Nurturing Your Child's Creativity

My mother nurtured my childhood creativity by investing in a constant stream of art and craft materials. The cupboards were loaded with candle wax, plaster of paris, hobby tex (remember those), shrinky plastic, paint, felt pens and drawers full of fabric, ribbon and buttons. As a child I was constantly creating; colouring in and sketching, making lavish creations out of cereal boxes, sewing my teddy bears and dolls outfits, and hand making gifts for family and friends.

My innate urge to be creative free ranged in grand style. I delved freely into my imagination and expressed every delight and idea found there. I experimented with poetry writing, perfume making (stripping the backyard lemon tea tree of its leaves and flowers), drama performance and turnip carving (no pumpkins in the cupboard calls for a substitute). Nothing was off limits, everything was useful for creating; every seed pod and shell collected became part of an insatiable calling to make something. Every free experiment in childhood was nudging me on the path of who I am today, art therapist, artist, author, public speaker, blogger, art teacher, intentional creative.

This school holidays I am delighted to share with families in my local community a school holiday art workshop that will nurture your child’s creativity. Fellow creative and gifted artist Sanchia and I, are offering a safe place to ignite and nurture your child’s creative spark. We have two workshops being run simultaneously: ‘Paint me Happy’ is a bright art canvas and ‘Fancy Face’ is learning how to draw the female face. Neither class requires any artistic abiliy as we will be going through each step together.  Our classes are all about having fun with art and exploring the process of creating something.
