What's Under My Anxiety?

Anxiety is more than just feeling stressed or worried. While stress and anxious feelings are common when we feel under pressure, they usually pass once the stressful situation has passed, or ‘stressor’ is removed. Anxiety is when anxious feelings don't go away – when they're ongoing and happen without any particular reason or cause. It’s a serious condition that can make it hard to cope with daily life (beyondblue.com.au).

There’s no one cause of anxiety, everyone is different and it's often a combination of factors that contribute to developing anxiety. Sometimes an emotion such as fear contributes to anxiety. For example, think about a pot of boiling water. Intense heat from the stove boils the water in the saucepan. Think of fear (or insert other emotion here) as the stove that boils the water. The saucepan doesn’t boil the water, it just holds the water. In order to keep the water cool and calm we need to take it off the stove or keep the stove dial to off.
Need help managing those underneath emotions? Art therapy can be beneficial for emotional awareness and anxiety and with guidance expressive art journaling can become a daily practice to use at home to aid in times of stress.
